The summer holidays provide an opportunity not only to rest and recover from the previous academic year, but also to spend time with family, pursue beneficial activities, and attend to matters that may not have been possible during term time.
They also offer an ideal opportunity to prepare for the year ahead. Even a small amount of preparation can provide a valuable head start and help students begin the new academic year with a stronger foundation. Below are some suggested guidelines to help students prepare for the upcoming year.
Becoming comfortable writing Arabic letters, words and sentences by hand will make note-taking, written exercises and examinations much easier throughout the course.
A simple and effective way to improve is to spend a little time regularly copying passages from an Arabic textbook. If you do not have one, copying passages from the Qur'an can also be beneficial. With consistent practice, handwriting usually improves naturally. Those wishing for additional guidance may also find the many Arabic handwriting tutorials available on YouTube to be helpful.
Students who are weak in reading should make improving their reading fluency a priority, particularly if they have not yet developed a strong foundation in Qur'anic reading.
This can be achieved through regular practice by reading the Qur'an, reading Arabic texts aloud, and making use of graded reading materials appropriate to their level. The objective is to develop accurate, fluent and confident reading rather than reading slowly, word by word.
A weakness in reading fluency can become a significant obstacle when studying Arabic and the Islamic sciences. Time invested in improving this skill at an early stage will make every subsequent subject considerably easier.
