Information for Teachers and Students

Goals

Understand and apply all the rules covered in the book.
Understand and translate the sentences contained in the exercises.
Perform tarkīb of the sentences.
Identify learned concepts in other Arabic texts and apply the relevant rules to them.

Teaching Methodology

The teacher will explain new rules and concepts during the lesson. These will then be reinforced through written and oral exercises.

Under the supervision of the teacher, students will complete the exercises verbally. In more complex sentences, the teacher may ask students to write a complete sentence together with its tarkīb (grammatical breakdown).

Notes

From Unit 2 onwards, many of the grammatical principles will already have been covered in First Steps to Understanding Naḥw. Students will therefore be expected to explain much of the lesson themselves, drawing upon the knowledge acquired previously.

The teacher's role will increasingly focus on verifying students' explanations, correcting misunderstandings and introducing any new rules or concepts not previously covered. This approach encourages students to consolidate their earlier learning whilst developing confidence in explaining and applying grammatical principles independently.

Unit 1: Part 2:

All the material in this section is taught in FSTU Ṣarf – Unit 1.

Unit 3 Section 2: Page 241-296

The explanation of this section has been revised in First Steps to Understanding Nahw. The teacher will therefore follow the explanation presented there and disregard the explanation in this book, as the revised version is clearer and more technically accurate.

Unit 3, Part 5 and 6: Pages 184-220

The teacher should explain the concepts using a selection of representative examples. It is not necessary to cover every exercise during class. Students may complete the remaining exercises independently to reinforce their understanding.

Unit 4, Part 1: Pages 299-324

Most of the concepts in this section have already been covered in First Steps to Understanding Ṣarf. Therefore, the teacher should briefly review the concepts using a selection of examples before moving on.
