First Steps to Understanding Sarf (FSTUS)
Goals
To be able to:
Memorise all the tables within the book
Pronounce, recall, spell and define all the Arabic terminologies and rules
Recognise, conjugate and translate verbs from English to Arabic and Arabic to English, especially verbs from the Quran
Teaching Methodology
The teacher will explain each verb and its conjugation.
Students must memorise these tables and recite them to the teacher.
Under the supervision of the teacher, students must complete all the exercises verbally. Thereafter, the students must complete selected questions in writing.
Exams
Vocabulary
The students should try to learn all the vocab provided in the text book.
However, the words in the document below must be learnt, and words from this list will be used in the written exam.
FSTU Sarf Vocab for Written Exams
The oral exam will be based on all the vocabulary given in the book.
Oral Exam Structure
Students will be required to conjugate 9 verbs.
Students will be given a maximum of 30 seconds to conjugate each verb. If a student is not able to conjugate within this time, it will be marked as incorrect.
If a student starts to recite a conjugation incorrectly, the moderator will correct them. This will be considered to be an error.
Each question is worth 3 marks
3 marks for correctness
2 mark for fluency

End of Year Exam (Term 4)
For the end-of-year exam, students will need to read all the tables provided in this document.
This can be spread over a few days.
The students will keep the booklet in front of them during the exam.
The teacher will start listening to students during class once Unit 10 is completed. There is no designated day for this exam.
Each question is worth 2 marks
1 mark for correctness
1 mark for fluency
